Every Christmas village starts with one building. Maybe it is a little church with a lit steeple, a snowy bakery, or a toy shop with a crowd at the window. Then, almost without noticing, there is a skating pond beside it, a row of lamp posts, a few carollers, and a second shelf being cleared. If you are reading this, you are probably somewhere along that happy road and wondering where to find the next piece.
We are Vintage Villages, a Toronto shop that does nothing but Christmas and Halloween villages, so we will be upfront: we think the best place to buy one is with us. Here is why, along with an honest look at where else Canadians shop for villages and what each place does well.
What to look for in a place to buy a Christmas village
Villages are porcelain and resin, often with lights, motors and small parts, and many of the most loved pieces were made decades ago. That makes a few things matter more than they would for most holiday decor.
- New and retired, side by side. The current year's releases are wonderful, and so are the pieces that were retired years ago. A shop that carries both lets your village grow in whichever direction you love.
- People who know the pieces. Item numbers, series, what came in the box, which accessories pair with which building. Knowledge saves you time and helps every piece fit your display.
- Packing made for porcelain. A village piece needs to travel in its own box, cushioned on every side, inside a sturdy carton.
- Shipping that suits Canada. Prices in Canadian dollars, no border to cross and no duties waiting at the door.
- A real person to ask. Questions come up. A quick answer from someone who has handled the piece makes all the difference.
Where Canadians shop for Christmas villages
Seasonal and craft stores
Large seasonal and craft retailers often bring in a selection of Lemax each fall. They are a lovely way to see a few current pieces in person and pick up a starter building or some accessories while you shop for everything else. The selection tends to follow the season, so it is at its fullest in the autumn and changes from year to year.
Online marketplaces
Marketplaces are a treasure hunt, and plenty of collectors have found a long-wanted piece there. Many listings ship from the United States, so it is worth checking the shipping cost, the delivery time and any duties before you buy, and asking the seller about the box and condition.
Specialty village shops
A specialty shop brings the new releases, the retired pieces and the know-how together under one roof. This is where we fit in.
Why collectors choose Vintage Villages
New Lemax, straight from the source
We are an Authorized Lemax Retailer, so the current collections come to us directly. That includes the new 2026 Lemax releases, the full range of Lemax Christmas villages, and the figurines, trees and accessories that bring a scene to life. If you are just starting out, Lemax is a wonderful first village, and our first-time buyer's guide to Lemax walks you through choosing your first pieces.
Retired Department 56, gathered from collections across Canada
Retired Department 56 is our other great love. Collectors from coast to coast trust us with the villages they have built over the years, and those pieces find new homes through our shop. You will find Dickens' Village, The Original Snow Village, Christmas in the City, the North Pole Series, New England Village and a well-stocked shelf of Department 56 accessories. Our Collector's Vault holds the rarer finds, and Sets and Bundles gathers complete sets the way they were first sold.
Free shipping across Canada, packed by people who love villages
Shipping is free across Canada, with a small minimum order for the far north that is set out in our shipping policy. Every order is packed by hand, with each piece in its own box and plenty of cushioning around it, because we want your village to arrive looking exactly the way it did on our shelf. Collectors overseas can shop with us too: we ship to the United Kingdom, much of Europe, Australia and New Zealand, with prices shown in your own currency.
Real people, every day
We are a small team of collectors, and we answer every question ourselves. Email us at info@vintagevillages.ca and we will reply within about a day, or call 1-647-799-1448, every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern. Customers on Shop rate us 4.9 out of 5, and we read every review.
Helpful tools for collectors
A few things we have built to make the hunt more fun:
- Your wishlist. Tap the heart on any piece to save it. If a piece on your list comes back, we will send you an email so you can grab it.
- New this week. Each week we send a short email with the pieces that have just arrived, so you see the new finds first. You can join from the sign-up on our homepage.
- Your village, catalogued. Our free Village Collection tool lets you keep a list of the pieces you own, with photos, and share it with family and friends. It is a lovely way to see your village grow, and a handy record when you are deciding what to add next.
Looking for something specific?
Retired pieces come and go, and that is part of the joy of collecting. If you have a building in mind, add it to your wishlist! We see new collections arrive all year, and we are always adding new items.
And if you have a village of your own that is ready for a new home, we would love to hear about it. Our guide on selling a Department 56 or Lemax collection in Canada explains how it works.
Start with one piece
The best village is the one that grows with you, one building, one lamp post and one tiny snow-covered bench at a time. Whether you are choosing your very first piece or the one you have been searching for since your grandmother's village came out each December, we would be glad to help you find it. A village is never really done, is it.
